November 30th 2013: Dinner at Avellino and The Duck, Sturbridge

After managing to make it back to Massachusetts from NYC, where I had a lot of fun, with my friends, I decided to stop by Sturbridge for dinner at the Whistling Swan, a historical place containing 2 restaurants, namely Avellino, a pretty upscale Italian restaurant, and The Duck, a bar restaurant. I was informed that by eating at the central bar, I would be able to try both places at the same time, so I decided to do just that. Not feeling too hungry, I decided to get the Risotto con Funghi (arborio rice with wild mushrooms, truffle cream, parmesan cheese) from the Avellino side, and the Duck Quesadilla (confit rohan duck, smoked gouda, pear salsa, aji sour cream) from the Duck side.

The place also comes with a jar of crackers for starters.

To my disappointment, the cheese in the risotto was a little too strong, while the quesadilla was a little plain as well. At the same time, I suddenly felt extremely exhausted.

Not a good dining experience overall, but I would still give this place the benefit of the doubt, given its popularity. I'm just glad I got home safely today.

November 28th 2013: Celebrating Thanksgiving with Strangers

Today, I was to organize a meetup event for people in town without Thanksgiving plans to go watch the movie "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" at the AMC Loews Boston Common 19 theater. Before that, I spent my morning visiting several places. In Hopkinton, I first went to hike at the Whitehall/Fruit Street Trail. The trailhead was pretty hard to find as it was hidden behind a parked trailer beside the old Hopkinton Fire Station in Woodville at ~235 Wood Street. The path I took while here is shown below in pink.

Other than a waterfall at the site of the old mill dam, there wasn't anything  much else here.
From here, I headed to the Duck Pond Trail, located within the Hopkinton State Park at ~90 Saddle Hill Road. The path I took while here is shown below in pink.

The pond itself was not too bad to look at, although the state park itself is really close by.

The next place I went to was the Zettek Overlook, where the views of the surroundings were pretty good.

From here, I headed nearby to the Greenwood Road Trails, where I entered at about 9 Greenwood Road. The trail I took here is shown below in pink.
There were only partial views at the viewpoint though.
After viewing Bloods Pond at 32 South Mill Street,

I headed next to College Rock at ~23 College Street, where the rough path I took is shown below in black.
There wasn't any views to be had at the top of the rock though.
From here, I decided to check out Wildcat Pond in the town of Milford on the map at ~150 Cedar Street, where the path I took is shown in pink.
The pond itself wasn't too bad.
I headed back into Hopkinton to visit the Berry Acres Conservation Area. The path I took to view the water body here is shown below in pink.
The pond itself was nothing much to look at.
From here, I headed into Holliston, where the first place I went to hike at was the Frank A. Rees Trail, where I entered from ~470 Gorwin Drive. The path I took here is shown below in black.

The pond I came to see wasn't too bad, although the place was a little flooded.
After visiting Weston Pond,
It was time for another hike at the Poitras and Daniels Conservation Areas. I initially thought the trailhead was at the end of Fieldstone Drive, but it turned out to be just across the road from Holliston High School near Mellen Street on Hollis Street. The rough path I took while I was here to try to find the view here is shown below in pink.
Unfortunately, I got very disoriented while I was here, and did not see any good views at the top either. I ended up exiting the place via Fairlane Way and walking all the way back to my car along the road. A disappointing hike to say the least.

From here, I decided to head to lunch at Grasshopper Restaurant, a Chinese vegetarian place located in the Allston area of Boston. This place looks like a typical Vietnamese restaurant, and the food I got was actually pretty good.

I got the Light Assorted Appetizers (Vermicelli Roll, Edamame, Sesame Seaweed, and Cool Buckwheat Noodle), the Vietnamese Style Veggie Pizza (with tofu, vegetables, assorted seitan and salad), and the Steamed Spicy Tofu and Assorted Seitans Hot Pot (with lemon grass and pineapple).

Light Assorted Appetizers
Of the dishes, I was only disappointed with the buckwheat noodles, where they slapped a dollop of peanut butter right on top of the noodles with not much else effort. Other than that, all the other dishes were pretty tasty, though I could not finish most of it.

From here, I headed to Chinatown to find parking, and after doing so, I still had quite some time before the movie, so I decided to get some dessert at Hing Shing Pastry at 67 Beach Street in Chinatown. Apparently the egg tarts and mooncakes here are good, so I got a Lotus Seed Mooncake and an Egg Tart, as well as a Walnut Cookie.

I was not disappointed at all, although I would prefer my egg tarts with sweeter crusts.

From here, I headed to the cinema to meet up with everyone else. The movie was actually pretty good, although I don't know if I will pay that much for the IMAX experience again.

After the movie, we headed to New Golden Gate Restaurant at 66 Beach Street in Chinatown for dinner. We ordered lots of dishes, namely the Snow Peapod Stems, the Steamed Crab with Glutinous Rice, the Seafood Nest, the Walnut and Shrimp with Salad Dressing, the Beef and Broccoli, the Fried Flounder, the Salt and Pepper Squid, the Twin Lobsters, the Black Pepper Beef and the Soy Sauce Chicken.

The food was extremely good, and I even tried eating the chicken head. There's nothing much here except the tongue and the brains though.

With that, my Thanksgiving Day turned out to be fun after all. Looking forward to my trip to NYC tomorrow to see my friends.

November 27th 2013: Dinner at Peking Garden, Grafton

Today after work, I decided to get Chinese takeout from Peking Garden, a small takeout place at 206 Worcester Street in Grafton, since all the other restaurants were probably not opening for long on Thanksgiving Eve.

I decided to get the Crispy Orange Flavored Beef, which did not come with rice and I had to cook some instant noodles to go with it.

The beef wasn't crispy at all to say the least. Really disappointing meal.

November 26th 2013: Dinner at Royal India Cafe, Shrewsbury

For lunch, our boss decided to take us out to Ceres Bistro in Worcester. I have been here many times, but the lunch menu today was pretty different. After looking at it, I decided to get the Cream of Crab Soup and the Crab Crusted Burger (signature all beef patty, lump crab, Swiss, lettuce, tomato, lemon aioli, hand cut fries). Both dishes were actually pretty good in my opinion.

Other appetizers were ordered as well, including the Fried Calamari (fresh parmesan gremolata, peppadew, smoked tomato mayo), the Coriander Crusted Seared Tuna (honey Sriracha, seaweed salad, pickled ginger, the House Pickled Vegetable, Olive Tapenade and Hummus (piano paper bread, grilled naan, roasted garlic cloves, herb oil), and even a single Oyster on the Half Shell (Champagne mignonette, cocktail sauce).

The calamari was delicious as always, as was the tuna. The olive tapenade was a little too salty for my liking, however.

For entrees, some of my colleagues got the Sweet Soy and Ginger Braised Salmon (wasabi risotto, edamame, pea shoots and sugar snaps), the Pan Seared Swordfish (cajun dust, signature rice blend, crab-mango salsa, fresh vegetables) and the Hanger Steak and Frites (Hand Cut Fries, House Steak Sauce).

Of them, I was able to try the steak, and though my friend did not like it, I actually thought it was pretty good.

After work and before bowling, I decided to try out the newly opened Royal India Cafe, an nice Indian restaurant located in Shrewsbury.
There wasn't much people here when I came, considering it was still early. I decided to get the Boti Kebab Masala (Lean pieces of lamb marinated for 24 hours in yogurt and spices, baked on skewers in the tandoor and then finished in a tangy, spicy red sauce).
The curry was actually really good. Yet another Indian place to recommend here.

November 25th 2013: Dinner at Royal East Restaurant, Cambridge

Today after work, I had plans to go for a second round of salsa dancing lessons at the YWCA with Rumba Y Timbal in Cambridge with my friend. After picking her up from work, we decided to have dinner at Royal East Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant in Cambridge which also serves Malaysian food. The decor is pretty typical for a Chinese restaurant, so I did not take any pictures of it. For food, as we did not want to eat too much before dancing, we decided to get the Satay Chicken (Marinated chicken on skewer grilled to perfection, Served with Malaysian peanut sauce. Diced cucumber on the side), the Roti Canai (Hand tossed crispy and puffy Malaysian pancake freshly made to order. Served with curry chicken), the Kang Kung Belacan (Hollow greens sauteed with famous Malaysian mildly spicy shrimp paste) and the Aromatic Hainanese Rice.

Of all the dishes, I was only disappointed with the Satay Chicken, which were simply deboned chicken wings on skewers. The rest of the food was pretty good, though not as good as Penang in Boston. After dinner, we headed to the dance hall, where my friend pretty much outshone me on the dance floor, even though it was her first time. I was actually rather demoralized by that, more because I don't think I'm really cut out for dancing after all. Oh well. I'm glad my friend had fun though.

November 24th 2013: The 17th Boston International Fine Arts Show

This morning, I organized a meetup event for my group at the 17th Boston International Fine Arts Show, located within the Boston Center for the Arts Cyclorama in the South End area of Boston. As I had to pick my friend up, I was a little late, but thankfully the organizers of the show would not let us in until the show started properly anyway, and by then I had already arrived.

I have never been inside the Cyclorama before, so it was nice to see what it was like.
The paintings were pretty good too, coming from several galleries in the New England area and elsewhere, with some costing millions of dollars. None of my meetup friends could bother to afford one, to say the least. Pictures I took here, though not many due to concerns about copying, follow.

After everyone was done viewing the paintings at the show, a group of us decided to go to Chau Chow City for some dimsum. This place has 2 levels, with dimsum being served in pushcarts on the 2nd floor. We ate a lot today, but in the end, it was still less than $15 a person. Cheap, and good.
From here, my friends suggested that we go try the Egg Puffs from the shop of the same name at 42 Beach Street. This small store is located inside a small food court, with a single old lady manning the station.

I originally thought it would be 3 bucks per puff, but it is actually for an entire bunch. Wow. And they are so good. Glad my friend recommended this place.
From here, we parted ways, and I decided to head into the East Boston area to do some sightseeing there. At the East Boston Memorial Park at 143 Porter Street, it was already so cold and extremely windy, that I almost gave up and went home at that point. I decided to stay however and take pictures.

East Boston Memorial Stadium,
End of Logan Airport Service Drive
At the Bayswater Street Urban Wild, there were nice southern views of the ocean and the Boston skyline as well.

From here, I headed to the town of Winthrop, where I visited a few beaches until the sun went down for good.

With the sun completely set, I decided to head to Waltham for dinner at the Playmakers Sports Bar and Grill, a sports bar located along Moody Street.

For food, I got the Cajun Shrimp (seasoned sauteed shrimp with side of cocktail sauce), the Steak Tips (fine cut, marinated with house special sauce) and the Shrimp Quesadilla (grilled flour tortilla stuffed with jack and cheddar cheese).

The food was actually pretty good, though nothing very exciting to write about. With that, I ended my day of fun. I'm glad I made several new friends.
